IMMENSE PRESSURE is building inside me. It feels like every molecule is going to explode, leaving nothing but fire and ash.

I can’t work up the courage to call Williams. Can’t work up the courage to go through with the mission either.

It’s my job to be the getaway driver, to wait in the stolen van for Sean to force the target out of the condo.

The plan is to smuggle her into the River Vista basement, where she can’t be seen or heard. Cuff her to a steel pipe running down one of the brick walls. Take turns checking on her and providing food and water.

We’ll both wear masks and gloves, and she’ll be blindfolded going in and out of the building. Sean will ditch the van in the woods outside of town.

With any luck, the senator will be in Viper’s hands before anyone knows she’s gone.

The problem is relying on luck.

“I don’t think we’re ready,” I tell Sean as we’re standing in the musty basement. “We should delay.”

We’ve created a makeshift cell. A small cot in a corner with a blanket and pillow. A plastic jug of water and a few Nutri-Grain bars. There’s an old shower against the other wall that I was surprised still works. Also, a laundry room-type sink, but no toilet – just a bucket.

“No delays,” Sean says firmly. “It’s going down tonight. I’ll be waiting in the condo, you’ll be at the wheel, just like we planned.”

“What if her security team gets curious? I mean, they’ll be right outside. If she screams …”

“She won’t.”

“But, what if she does? We don’t have a plan for that.”

“Look, you’re just nervous. Don’t worry. I got the layout of the condo from the real estate company. And it’ll take less than five minutes to get her down here from there. We’re as ready as we’ll ever be.”

Just my luck to be teamed with a master war game strategist and newly crowned champion shooter.

Sean draws his Glock from the back of his jeans, where it’s been concealed under a loose cotton shirt.

“If anyone gets in our way,” he says, “they’ll be sorry.”
